The CR&S is a short line railroad which connects the Coal River Mining Company mine and the City of Coal River.  In addition the railroad serves a variety of businesses and industries located along its lines in and around the city.  Most of the locomotives are on lease from Southern Railroad or purchased used equipment from other systems.

Freight service to and from the mine to the rail yard is a short run.  Other trains include outgoing freight, local passenger service from the city to the mine, and a scheduled Southern passenger train.
